Making Music

Lately I've been paying attention to the words people say. I find it amazing that we all have access to the same words and yet, each of us links those words together in unique and varied ways.
Personally, it's a rare moment that what I mean in my head actually comes out of my mouth the way I intended. It's so much easier to write/type it out, because then there's an eraser. Or white-out. Or the delete key.
Words are powerful. With words we hurt and heal. We disappoint and encourage. We agree and disagree...and agree to disagree.
Words can make or break a relationship. They can make you rethink what you've thought about me. Words are what we've got to express love and affection, disdain and regret.
The Bible tells us to speak to each other with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. I think that means to use our words to make music, as often as we can.
I think about the One who is the Word. Who spoke entire worlds into existence. "Let there be..." he said. And there was. I'm told it was that very Word that wrapped himself up in skin like yours and mine, moved into an ordinary neighborhood, and walked side by side with regular people who miss the mark every day, so that we would know peace and hope and joy and love. For real. It's a mystery that I wish I understood better. And I am promised that one day I will.
Until then, I try to love like Him. I try to use my words to make music, as often as I can.
Beginning with the words we say to ourselves, I pray that today we find music in the words we hear and the words we speak. Making music. One word at a time.
I made the word collage, above, by pasting I Peter 3:10 (The Message) into this site.
Read more about loving like Him.

Words are powerful.
Peace to you.

And what beautiful music is found among some of these blogs!
My husband and I were just talking about words, last night. How some are thrown around, some careless, and some even vile. From us, those carrying HIS Word in us. Christians. May we be reminded of our words, of His Words, to make music with each one. Our words honoring HIM, even in the small talk. A timely post Deidra.
Ps. Just a note: For Hubby, who won't see this, but even in secret, he's treasured. Where God yoked us so equally, not only by Spirit, by also by our walks in the Spirit. Hand-in-hand together.
You are amazing. Way more insightful and observant and in touch than I am. I would like to be more like you and think deep philosphical thoughts but mostly my thoughts are mundane and shallow.
So I enjoy being thought provoking vicariously, though!
I will email you on how to get yourself a pair of cozy socks... xoxo
Now you have me thinking about words! I love your posts!
And thanks for the reminder of the OATH I took in the last post - I needed it!
My Job right now is on the phone all day, talking to people and they all need to read your blog. Folks don't realize what power their words hold when you can't see someone's face! Just like here, when we have to be careful because the words are all you see, we need to imagine the effect without the body language and smiles before we hit print!
Beautiful post.
Thank you for stopping by my sight.
You are so right! Words are so powerful. Great post:)
Thank you so much for these encouraging words!
THis will give me much to ponder the next few days!
peace, blessings, and MUSIC!

Trying to love like Him -- I love that!
I teach high school sophomores and on frustrating days, I just pray, "Lord, let me see them through Your eyes!"
Since visiting with Mary at the assisted living residence, I have found just how powerful words spoken and not spoken are. You see, Mary can no longer speak with her mouth but through her eyes, I understand and they speak volumes as well.
I definitely don't take words for granted anymore. Even more, I know how words heal, lift up, kill the spirit or soothe. I want to be one who uses words to bless others not hurt them.
Thank you for reminding me to make music with words.
As one who talks too much...I often reflect on the power of words. i read proverbs almost every day to remind me to keep my tongue in check...I like the idea of making music with my words. thanks.
Thanks, going to put it to practice today!

Deidra,
Oh girl, your words totally blessed me today! One reason I love to write is because my written words just make more sense than my spoken words. That delete button is so very helpful!
And your words do make music! :)
Kristen
PS I remember really enjoying your words when you guest-posted at (in)courage. Thanks for visiting me, too.
I wish my mouth came with an erase button....sometimes I have diarrhea of the mouth...lots of open mouth insert foot moments.
well said my friend. xo
I like how you said this, "I find it amazing that we all have access to the same words and yet, each of us links those words together in unique and varied ways." I am finally getting caught up reading some blogs and I decided to start with yours. May God abundantly bless you and yours. I would love to meet you when I get back to NE.
I always think of the expression, "the pen is mightier than the sword". Words can do so much and it is our responsibility to use them wisely, to choose them carefully and to exercise them often! Great post Deidra! xo
